The MBA Program at Howard University is well known for its ability to prepare students for leadership careers in business, government, and nonprofit organizations.
Our alumni are in leadership roles throughout the nation and worldwide. The Howard University MBA Program was the first university in Washington, DC to be accredited by the AACSB International—The Association to Advance Collegiate Schools of Business.
The Program is open to domestic and international applicants with a bachelor’s degree or an international four-year equivalent from an accredited college or university in any area of concentration, with at least two years of work experience.

Full-Time MBA Program
The full-time day program offers superior management education in a dynamic and intellectually stimulating environment that prepares graduates to enter the global economy as effective leaders, planners, and managers. Graduates of the program develop a solid knowledge and analytical competence in a wide range of functional disciplines, through classroom and hands-on application.
Accelerated Flex MBA Program
The part-time accelerated evening program offers the high-quality content of the full-time day program to students who wish to continue working during the day. Students who enroll in the part-time program may opt to participate in the accelerated part-time program, which requires completion in 3 rather than 4 years.
Dual Degree Programs
The HUMBA program has also partnered with the other professional schools and the College of Engineering, Architecture, and Computer Sciences (CEACS) to offer a number of dual degree and special programs. These programs include the JD/MBA program with the School of Law; the MD/MBA program with the School of Medicine; the PharmD/MBA program with the School of Pharmacy; MSW/MBA with the School of Social Work; MDiv/MBA with the School of Divinity; and BSE/MBA with the CEACS.
Program Curriculum
The MBA program consists of an aggregate of 48 credit hours to complete the program. All MBA students are required to complete 33 credit hours of core courses that provide the foundation for graduate business education.

The Howard University School of Business MBA program is open to all persons holding a baccalaureate degree, or its equivalent, from a nationally or regionally accredited college or university, located in the United States or abroad.
Application materials and all supporting documents become the confidential property of the MBA Admissions Office and cannot be returned to the applicant. Applications are not reviewed until all materials are received in the MBA Admissions Office. The application must be typed and all attachments should be typed on letter-sized paper. Please follow the instructions on the length and format of each attachment.
Dual Degrees & Special Programs
Students seeking a dual degree must meet both the admission requirements of the MBA Program and the other respective schools. We offer the following dual degrees:
- DDS/MBA
- JD/MBA
- MD/MBA
- MSW/MBA
- Pharm.D/MBA
- MDiv/MBA
- BSE/MBA
Engineering undergraduate degree must be completed at Howard University to pursue the dual degree option. The Bachelor of Science in Engineering degree and the professional dual degree programs must be completed at Howard University.
International Applicants
International applicants and students must enter in the fall as full-time students in the regular MBA program or one of the joint degree programs. International graduate students are required to show sponsorship as determined and published by the university. Students should contact the Office of International Student Services for further information.
Degree Requirements
- A cumulative grade point average (GPA) of 3.00 (or Standard Letter Grade of “B”) is required for graduation.
- Students in the MBA program that earns a grade of “C” or less in more than two courses will be dropped from the MBA program.
- When a student’s GPA falls below 3.0, she/he must raise the GPA to 3.0 during the subsequent semester in which the student is enrolled.
- Students failing to do so will be dropped from the MBA program.
Admissions Criteria and Application Materials
Howard University Online Application accompanied by a non-refundable application fee of $123. (Upload unofficial transcript(s), letters of recommendation, and employee verification. Mail official transcript(s), letters, and employment verification to the Office of Graduate Programs – see mailing address below.)
One (1) official transcript from each undergraduate institution attended. Graduate Management Admission Test (GMAT) results should be forwarded from the Graduate Management Council and GRE scores should be forwarded from Educational Testing Services. Code Standardized Test Scores: 5297
Test of English as a Foreign Language (TOEFL) results for international students for whom English is not their native language should be forwarded from the Educational Testing Service. (A minimum score of 550 on the written exam and 213 on the computer-based exam is required for admission.)
International English Language Testing System (IELTS) is also accepted for international students. (A minimum score of 6.0-6.5 on the exam is required for admission.)
Personal Statement. Applicants should provide a Personal Statement that describes the uniqueness of his/her character, abilities, issues of diversity, academic history, community service activities, and professional experience. Additionally, the Statement should discuss the applicant’s interest in the Howard University MBA program (HU MBA) and how completing the HU MBA will facilitate realizing his/her dreams and aspirations.
Two (2) "Letters of Recommendation" that address a candidate’s intellectual and personal capabilities. Topics should cover personal integrity; ability to work with others; leadership qualities; oral and written communication skills; and community involvement. Letters should be completed by a supervisor, a member of academia, and someone who can attest to these capabilities. All letters must be on letterhead, signed, and placed in individually sealed envelopes, and the signature of the recommender on the seal.
Current Resume. (A minimum of two years of relevant work experience after completion of the undergraduate degree is required.) Documentation from employer(s) indicating two years of full-time relevant work experience.
Residence Requirements
- Students may transfer a maximum of six graduate semester hours from other Schools of Business that are accredited by the AACSB-International Association for Management Education.
- Students are expected to complete the MBA degree within six years from the date of their initial enrollment in the program.
- Students who have not completed the MBA within the time limit will be dropped from the MBA program. If that student wishes to complete the MBA, s/he would need to reapply and be readmitted to the MBA program.
Caution to Prospective Students
The Board of Trustees of Howard University on September 24, 1983, adopted the following policy statement regarding applications for admission: "Applicants seeking admission to Howard University are required to submit accurate and complete credentials and accurate and complete information requested by the University. Applicants who fail to do so shall be denied admission. Enrolled students who as applicants failed to submit accurate and complete credentials or accurate and complete information on their application for admission shall be subject to dismissal when the same is made known, regardless of classification."
