Center for Insurance Education
HISTORY
The Center for Insurance Education (CIE) was created in 1978 to accommodate the insurance industry’s need for talented minorities who could offer diverse perspectives. The Center’s primary objective of is to equip and train a pipeline of well-qualified graduates for a rewarding carrier in the insurance industry. The Center’s primary activity is to meet the insurance industry’s needs by providing timely programs, events and a cutting-edge curriculum. In addition, the Center sponsors various activities to recognize the students’ achievements and to raise funds for the Center’s activities.
WHAT DO WE OFFER?
FINANCIAL SERVICES, INSURANCE AND RISK MANAGEMENT (FIRM) SYMPOSIUM
Upon completion of an in-depth application process, talented students are selected to participate in the FIRM Symposium program. This week-long event consists of both academic and skills development sessions that allow students to gain insight into the duties, responsibilities, and corporate culture of various insurance-related fields. To facilitate this learning experience, industry experts and corporate executives conduct seminars and panel discussions to share personal experiences and provide professional insight. Participants are often awarded internship positions and scholarships.
INSURANCE PANEL
The "Insurance Panel" is an annual spring event where insurance industry experts interact with students in the Business Orientation classes. The industry experts provide career advice and share personal insights to introduce students to the nuances of the industry and potential career opportunities.
SUMMER ACTUARIAL PROGRAM
This program selects minority students from a nationwide pool of qualified high school candidates, who have demonstrated a high level of potential in mathematics and computer science. This week-long, tuition-free program is funded by the Society of Actuaries, Casualty Actuarial Society, CIE, and corporate sponsors.
MAXIMILIAN WALLACH AWARDS LUNCHEON
In honor of the former Washington, DC Insurance Commissioner, Maximilian Wallach, this event is a focal point of achievement recognition for the CIE. The luncheon highlights the overall student achievement and is the premier “Thank You” luncheon for the Center’s corporate partners.
GAMMA IOTA SIGMA (GIS), TAU CHAPTER
Gamma Iota Sigma (GIS) is the international insurance and actuarial science fraternity. Howard University became the first and only HBCU with a GIS chapter in 1979. Each year, all of the fraternal activities and are reported to the grand chapter for review. At the end of the year, each school is judged and awarded for excellence at the annual conference. GIS students host industry learning seminars and contribute to the Center’s various activities.
