What is BisonHacks?

BisonHacks is a 24-hour hackathon where students collaborate, learn, and build innovative solutions to real-world challenges. Hosted at Howard University School of Business, the event brings together builders and creatives from a wide range of academic backgrounds in a supportive, high-energy environment.  

Designed for everyone. Whether you’re a first-time hacker or an experienced developer, BisonHacks welcomes participants at all experience levels. No prior hackathon experience needed - just bring your curiosity and creativity. 

Beyond the build. Participants gain hands-on project development experience, connect with industry mentors, explore professional development opportunities, and discover careers in technology, entrepreneurship, and digital innovation.

A First for BisonHacks: Graduate Students Welcome

For the first time ever, Bison Hacks is open to graduate students.

This expansion strengthens the hackathon experience by bringing together undergraduate and graduate participants across disciplines to collaborate, innovate, and build impactful solutions. Graduate students are eligible to participate alongside undergraduates, contributing advanced skills, research insight, and real world perspective to the Bison Hacks community. 

Program History

Spanning over two decades and now in its eleventh year, BisonHacks was created to expand access to hackathons and technical innovation for students at Howard University and beyond. The program emphasizes learning, collaboration, and industry exposure while fostering a supportive environment for participants who may be new to hackathons, engineering, or product development.

Eligibility

BisonHacks is open to: 

  • Undergraduate students from any major 
  • Graduate students from any discipline (new this year!) 
  • All experience levels – beginners encouraged 
  • Anyone interested in technology, design, business, or innovation 

You do not need prior hackathon experience to participate.

Frequently Asked Questions

Do I need technical experience to participate?

Not at all. BisonHacks is designed to be beginner-friendly and welcomes students of all skill levels—from first-time hackers to experienced developers. 

Do I need a team to register?

No. Students may register individually and form teams at the competition.

What if I don’t have a project idea yet?

That's perfectly fine! Many participants arrive without a specific idea. You'll have opportunities to brainstorm with teammates, get inspiration from mentors, and explore challenge prompts at the event.

Is the event in person or virtual?

BisonHacks is an in-person competition hosted on Howard University’s campus.

When does the event take place?

The hackathon runs overnight from February 21–22, 2026, for a full 24 hours of building and collaboration. 

Is there a cost to participate?

No. Participation in BisonHacks is free for all registered students. 

Will food and beverages be provided?

Yes. Meals, snacks, and beverages will be available throughout the competition. 

What is the Code of Conduct?

BisonHacks is an official 2026 MLH Member Event. All participants must follow the MLH Code of Conduct. We are committed to providing a safe, inclusive, and welcoming environment for all attendees.

What should I bring?

Students should bring a laptop, charger, and any tools or materials they may want to use during the hackathon. Students are also encouraged to bring sleeping bags if they intend to stay in the building throughout the competition (recommended). 

How will projects be judged?

Teams will be evaluated on five key criteria: 

  • Impact — How effectively does the project address a real-world challenge? 
  • Innovation & Creativity — How original and inventive is the approach? 
  • Completeness — Does the solution work, or is there a clear development roadmap? 
  • Sustainability — Is the solution viable long-term within its intended community? 
  • Design Quality — How well-designed and user-friendly is the final product?

What prizes can teams win?

Prize details will be announced closer to the event. BisonHacks has awarded over $100,000 in prizes throughout its history.

Can graduate students participate?

Yes! For the first, time, BisonHacks 2026 is open to graduate students from all disciplines. Graduate and undergraduate students will collaborate together throughout the event.
